Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.

Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the event," they added.

City officials said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
